Red Pen

Excerpted from UK papers “the Daily mail” of 26 Dec 2008,
Hundreds of schools have barred teachers from marking in red in case it upsets the children.
They are scrapping the traditional method of correcting work because they consider it ‘confrontational’ and ‘threatening’.

Pupils increasingly find that the ticks and crosses on their homework are in more soothing shades like green, blue, pink and yellow, or even in pencil.
Headmaster Richard Sammonds said: ‘Red pen can be quite demotivating for children. It has negative, old-school connotations of “See me” and “Not good enough”.

I just cannot resist posing a question to whoever who tries to create a tempest in a teapot :With all the problems in the world right now (the war in Palestine, the Szechuan earthquake, scarity of natural resources etc) all that you could think of is the ink colour of a pen?

If red is really that “threatening”, then everyone in my generation must be attending psychological counselling right now because our teachers has been using a red pen from day one in school.

Suppose a student gets 0/100 in his examination, writing it in yellow, green or red, the score will still be 0/100. Changing the colour of the pen does not make the mistake right. On the other hand, if the student gets 100/100 in his examination, he will still be happy no matter what colour of ink the teacher uses.

Getting down to bedrock, it is a question of the examination result. Perhaps educators should concentrate on improving teaching methods rather than coming up with ludicrous excuse like changing the colour of the pen.

International day of the shoe

(extracted from 2008 blog)
Today we celebrate the first International day of the shoe.

Unpopular politicians were being booed, attacked and even assassinated. But never in the history of mankind, a politician was propelled with a pair of size 10 stinky boots, let alone the president of the most powerful country in the world.
After 8 years in service, George Bush finally showed that he is capable to do one thing well: to duck a flying shoe.

That is something special to commenorate.

Try your skill too :

H and M experience

Date : Yesterday
Time : Around closing time
Venue : H&M store, Milan
Position : Outside male fitting room

“Hey boys, we are closing now.” The salesman spoke loudly to those inside the fitting rooms. He then pushed a cabinet to block the entrance to the fitting rooms so to prohibit customers from entering.
In a higher octave, he yelled to his colleague with the intention that everyone can get an earful, “Anna, if customers want to use the fitting room, tell them instead of messing around, better to come earlier to shop and hurry up.”

What a shock! Did I hear him right? What kind of attitude is that? We purchase the goods with money, not asking for alms. A little respect to the customers is the minimum thing a salesman can offer. Maybe he fails to realise that his monthly pay check is dependent on the customers. If nobody buys, the company will have no money to pay his salary.

Well, on the other hand, some salesman get promoted to become managers. Those ignorant ones will remain as salesman forever.

Say Cheese

sf.jpg picture by niclii

Some people are so amazing. They possess a rare ability to bear an identical smile in each and every photo. How they do it? So perfect they are, they retain the same measurement should you want to verify with a ruler. Do these people practice smiling in front of a mirror on a daily basis?

“Ready? Say cheezeeeee.” Upon that cue, they mechanically flash their perfect smile like switching on a neon sign board. That is the only expression that they consider best looking. And that will be how others will see them in the photos, always. But does it really reflective of the them as humans? Aren’t human beings suppose to be more expressive in the animal world?

If they look at their past photos, surely they will not be able to evoke any memories of their emotional state at those occasions. That is because their expression gave no clues. No matter where they are, they appear all the same in those photos. Only two things vary: the background and the clothing. So what is the point of taking different photo? Isn’t it easier and cost saving to Photoshop the same subject on different background?

We cannot have the same mood all the time. Sometimes we are ecstatic, joyful, pleased, amused etc. Although some aspect of us may be less flattering but it manifest our inner moods at that moment, which is more valuable. Having that perfect smile in the photo is fine. But it is boring and fake if every photo is like that. So what if you do not look pristine in a photo? It is the same you. You with additional personality. So get up and do not be afraid to show the other side of you.

Imperfection is perfect!

Zurich's street parade 2007

10 aug 2007
The weather forecast for Zurich’s weekend was bad, real bad. Maximum temperature was 18 degrees with heavy rain. What kind of summer is that? Will Zurich’s biggest annual event be cancelled? Without any possibility to cancel our train ticket, my friends and I boarded the train from Milan to Zurich on Friday 10 Aug.(year 2007)

At 17.30, Zurich’s central train station is crowded with people. It is not clear whether they are arriving or leaving. Some topless male workers are mounting a 10 metres high stage. Another group of staff, wearing black t-shirt and helmet on their head, are hanging the disco lights over us. Tomorrow, this train station will be transformed into a mega discothèque. As we walk towards our hotel situated 200 mt away, the dark clouds hovered coldly above us. Last year, at this time, there were already several DJ testing their sound system in the streets. Today, there is none. Hmmm, not a good sign.

We had a quick dinner at Lee’s corner, a Chinese food take away stall. A plate of sambal chicken rice and a coke cost CHF20.50 (SGD26.00) No kidding. I regret eating it. Partly for the high price, partly for the smell of garlic in my mouth throughout the whole night.

Hardbrucke is an Industrial zone recently becoming a youngsters’ hang out place. Bars, discos, shops etc. It is less than a one minute train journey, just one stop from the Central train station. Train departs in every 5-7 minutes. First we went to AKT bar for a drink. The crowd is friendly and dancing to the techno music. I asked for a whisky cola. They gave me a 0.33L glass with whisky filled up till 90% and a small bottle of coca cola. We decide to return to our hotel after 2 hours.

The night train brought us back to the central train station under the drizzling sky. The stage has already been completed. A drummer is testing his strokes and the sound for tomorrow’s gig. We’ll see, if there will be a parade tomorrow.

11/aug 2007
The sky is so grey that it is difficult to tell the time of the day. I put on my padded vest, and go for breakfast at Migros café. It is actually a section of the supermarket Migros, which offers coffee and pastries.

We cross the bridge where white goose and grey ducks are swimming in the lake underneath. At 10.30 am, the music is already blasting from the central station, sending sizzling sounds through the glass panels. It is a good idea that the organiser places one of the dance venues there. If it rains, at least there is a sheltered place to dance. One by one, the train continue to bring more people into Zurich. NS boys in uniforms, fresh out of camps for their weekend, remained in the station to participate. About 600 guys and gals move their body to the pumping tunes. Most of them are also showing off their fruits of their creation. Girls with vibrant colour tinted hair, faces sprayed with funky colours. Boys with spiky coloured hair and strange looking pants. The kiosks are busy selling cans of beers. The air is filled with enthusiasm and energy.

As attractive as it may be, this party is too early for us especially right after breakfast. After a few snaps of photos, we head back to Hardbrucke station again. The MAAG event hall is one of the official party venues of Street Parade. Many worlds famous DJ like Sander van Doorn will be showing off their skills here tonight. It is unlikely that we will be attending the event tonight so we come to explore the place now.

The opposite side of the road is where the famous Zurich made recycled bags brand “Freitag”’s signature store is located. The 7 storey store is made up of used shipping containers. http://www.freitag.ch/ It is a unique building to marvel at.

After coming out from a charming Spanish/Mexican restaurant “Turm”, the world seems to have double its spin during our lunch because the streets suddenly become more vibrant. Food vendors are starting to mount stands and light their grills. Shops are closed and bars are opened. Technicians lay their cables setting up more dj stations. Yes, even the wind is warmer now. THE STREET PARADE IS ON!

Like in the movie "Close encounters of the 3rd kind", everyone move towards the direction of Opernhaus, one of the gathering points of the parade. Oh my god, how can we lose out? In a second, we dash back to our hotel rooms busy drawing out all the barang barang from our bags. It is show time baby!

At about 3.00pm we step into the streets dressed up in our special attire. To be honest, I felt a little embarrassed, silly and ridiculous. People laugh at our dressing and we laugh at ourselves. On the other hand, looking beautiful is not the spirit here. At least for today, conformation is ignored. Being unique and different is celebrated.

Once on the road, people ask to take photos with us and we do the same with others. It feels just like the red carpet of the Academy awards. Everyone here is a star. Different styles of music from stalls and bars are dispersed in the air. They are mixed together to form an anthem building up the spirits. As long as you like music and you like to have fun, you are most welcome to participate. And this parade is free. Probably one of the reasons why this parade is so successful and famous is because there is no discrimation, no prejudices.

Even chaos has its logic. At a certain point of time, the first float arrived, carrying about 50 dancers all dressed in white on board. Their DJ plays his selection through their roaring stereo. It stops in front of us to encourage our support. The crowd yell, clapping to the beat. After a few minutes, the float moved further down the route to meet more cheering spectators.
Not long afterwards, the second float arrives, mixing a different sound and bringing with them a different group of supporters. Then the third float, the fourth, the fifth…….

We decided not to stay on to witness all the 24 floats. Doing that would miss all the fun in other corners. On the main stage at 100 mt away, dancers are grooving erotically to the music in funky costumes. With drinks in our hand, we nose around the smaller streets which are less intense but just as exciting. Music continues to discharge into the air. Many people already sitting down to rest. We halt at Cranberry bar which is just by the main road. They play good tecno music. It is crowded with many young people merry making and dancing outside.

Gradually the day light left us. I bought a grilled sausage from the road side vendor (CHF5.00/SGD 6.30) as we stroll to along the street. (http://www.predigerhof.ch/) Some of our friends went "Missing In Action" but never mind, we’ll sure to meet up later. At 10.30 pm, it's time to investigate the main train station. It is so congested with people that it is impossible to go near to the stage. A brasserie and a bar by the sides had cleared their tables to transform into a dance hall. I was obligated by the exceptional progressive music beat to move my lazy bum. The party here in the train station will go on till 6.00 am the next morning. An hour and a half later,
I realise silence gradually creeps in. The music, the base and the noise which was part of the atmosphere have vanished. The local law stipulates that all open-air gigs have to be terminated at midnight. Private clubs however, are permitted to continue their ball. Notwithstanding the music curfew, countless people remain in the street. No music? No problem. It is the atmosphere, the mood, the surrounding that makes one stay out. What an exceptional parade.

Post Olympic Syndrome

3736621981.jpg Liu xiang picture by niclii

I watch the Olympics' closing ceremony with melancholy. It has been my most faithful companion for the past 17 days. What do I do after this?

During this period, I was showed how hard work pays off beautifully. Honour and pride come from sweat and sacrifice. Our dreams have to be fought and win, with all the determination and self belief. Ancient sports and human are actually intertwined. I lauded at the magical relation between physique and beauty. I saluted the broken yet undaunted spirits. I cheered at the perfect dive, I wept at despaired fall. Heroes were crowned, heroes were trounced. Legends were made, legends were overwritten. Life just doesn’t get more dramatic than this, does it?

Cut it

before
P1030445.jpg picture by niclii
after

Let me take the opportunity of the sunny weather before the arrival of snow this weekend. It is time to prune the plants in the garden. The hibiscus had their glorious moment in the summer. When the flowers dried and the leaves fell, leaving behind naked twigs and bare stems. The branches of the fig tree desperately needs a trimming too. So tall they have grown, that their fruits are beyond reach even with a ladder. It only makes the birds happy because they are the only ones enjoying the sweet pulps. So off they go, one by one, under the snipping of my shears.

The plants do not suffer at all. On the contrary, they benefit from the annual pruning. Given that boaster, they will grow taller, more voluptuous and bounteous next year.

This is my favourite moment in the whole gardening process. 600m3 of garden space? Chicken feet. 3 days’ work? No problem! Actually, I don’t consider that as work at all. It is endearing to be able to contribute something to nature. Imagine, next year there will be more flowers because I intersected the right branch! (or the plant just perish because I slashed off a vital trunk)

Pruning plants is not so much different from how one raises his/her children. To decide what is good for them, we must first identify what they really are. I mean, we cannot expect a rose from a cactus plant. We delete the distorted section to prevent them going astray. We encourage the stronger wing so that they can flourish. We lent a helping hand so that they can reach new heights to receive sunshine. When we make the wrong judgement for them, it will cause disastrous effect in the long run.

I have done well last year in the pruning event and was rewarded a garden with bountiful flowers. Let’s hope I will do better this year. It is a continuous learning process for me.

The Beginning

Everyone has a blog. To be more exact, every young person who is connected to the modern lifestyle writes blogs. It comes just as natural as breathing, listening to IPOD and carrying the latest model of cell phone.

After visiting my friend’s interesting and ingenious blog, the temptation to open one myself is as strong as my crave for chocolates. However there are some resistance. Do I really feel comfortable opening up myself for everyone to see or to know? If the contents is not genuinely true about me, then it is no point putting up. What is the meaning of inventing something that does not represent me? That’s hypocrite.
Next question : Is there anybody really wants to know what I have to write? I doubt so. To start with, I am not particularly special nor interesting. I do not have special life experiences that could be inspiring to others. There are no places that I have travelled so far or so deep that others could learn something from. The paltry talents that I possess are even less reason for someone to get interested. I mean, who will be impressed by someone who can finish 200gm chocolates in 1 minute?

But perhaps somewhere out there, someone, even just one, for some unknown reason, who is interested in what I have to write, then this is for you.
